Session 13: Sunbeam Adventure Day Camp

  • YMCA Baldwin Center Barters Island Road Boothbay, ME, 04537 United States (map)

Sunbeam Adventure Day Camp welcomes 12-15 year olds who are neurologically and/or physically diverse to enjoy a week of fun and adventure on Knickerbocker Lake. Participants will get the opportunity to swim, paddle board, challenge themselves on a low ropes course, and explore the woods. This inclusive, supportive camp also invites participants to make new friends, foster independence, acknowledge self-worth, dig deep into their grit and resilience, and beam with smiles.

Campers:

Sunbeam is for 12-15 year olds who are neurologically and/or physically diverse

Camper Experience:

Hearty Roots Adventure Camps foster resilience and wellness for Maine youth through a fusion of outdoor adventure programming and social-emotional experiences. Relationship building, exploring, games, journaling, yoga, and mindfulness activities are all a part of the recipe for programming that not only encourages positive affirmation, meaningful connections, and healthy mindsets, it provides a safe space for all participants to go on a journey of self-discovery. All camps culminate in a Closing Circle where campers reflect upon and share their experiences with each other and their families!

We are very excited to share that this week of camp includes a 4-day art workshop with a local artist and writer/educator! In this workshop, we’ll explore what it means to be part of a healthy community while building art skills. With the guidance and support of artist/educator Peter Bruun and teacher/writer Leigh Perkins, each camper will complete a painting about themselves and their relationship to community. Through a process of conversation and art-making we’ll explore personal strengths and self-worth, considering how we fit into our communities and how we can make them better. The goal of this workshop is to foster confidence, celebrate individuality and empower participants to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Sunbeam session is open to 9-12 participants with 4-6 qualified adventure mentors for intentional supervision and purposeful group facilitation. Support persons of Sunbeam campers are welcome to spend a portion or all of the day at camp with us if they would prefer.

A pack list and additional camp details will be sent to families in the weeks leading up to the start of camp.
